| Scenes Along The Kintyre Way Walking Trail | ||
Kintyre is ideal for both the experienced and inexperienced walker with many different types of walk, ranging from beach and forest walks to more strenuous cliff and coastal walks.
Kintyre's newest trail, the Kintyre Way Walking Trail starts at Tarbert Harbour and ends at Dunaverty Bay, a total distance of 89 miles. Including all alternative route options, the entire walk is 103 miles. Depending on your ability, the walk will take you between 4 and 7 days to complete. Why not spend a few days at places along the route before continuing. Should you wish to stay at Dalnaspidal Guest House, we can provide a Shuttle Service between the various route sections and also arrange to collect your rug sacks along the way.
As the Kintyre Way does not go to the Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse - why not make your way to the car park and then prepare yourself for quite a steep but very rewarding 2 mile stroll to the lighthouse with spectacular views of the surrounding area and Northern Island on a clear day. The Lighthouse is situated on a precipitous cliff 240 feet above the sea and was one of the first to be erected by the Northern Lighthouse Board's Commissioners. As the lighthouse is inaccessible from the sea, materials and stores had to be landed by boat about 6 miles away and then taken on horseback over the mountain. A single journey from the boat's landing place to the lighthouse represented one days work. Despite these adversities, the lighthouse was built in 22 months and the first light was exhibited on the night of 1 November 1788.
